1. Don't be afraid to try
The first step to teaching with technology, is actually teaching with technology! If you are nervous, start by using media tools that YOU control. Show youtube clips, or TED talks in class, use commercials as discussion starters, etc; find your own groove. Move at a pace you are comfortable with, you can dip your toes in the pool, don't jump in head first!
2. Don't be afraid to fail
Of course there will be some failures, but as a teacher you are always learning anyway! Tweak your idea and try again!
3. Create your network
Collect resources and online information! Collect, Collect, Collect!
4. A little tech goes a long way: engagement is key
As with most teaching methods, delivery is key. Make sure activities are managed in order for them to be effective and appropriate for your lesson.
5. Don't reinvent the wheel
Taking traditional methods and delivering them through tech measures will do nothing but waste your time and you students time. Use technology to advance learning, not change the delivery.
6. Create your own digital footprint
A professional online presence is comforting to students, parents and faculty. If done right it will only help your career!
7. Free is good
There are plenty of free resources online that are just as good as expensive ones. If they aren't use your teaching to make them valuable.
8. Don't wat for 1:1- Start and they will share
Not all classrooms will have an iPad for each student, and that is okay. You can utilize group work and individual work performed one by one. You'll be teaching technology and sharing, look at you go!
9. Give them credit: your students know more than you think they do!
Your students know what's going on even if you don't. Its okay to acknowledge that you learn from then just as much, if not more than they learn from you.
10. Always have plan B
If you have a lesson that is completely dependent on technology, ALWAYS , I repeat, ALWAYS, have a back up plan. Power outages, system failure, poor wifi signals all happen. They happen a lot. Be conscious of this, and turn it into an opportunity to detox from technology in this screen based society. Use your confidence and optimism to create a teachable moment here. You can do it!
